How to choose a home EV charger.

Most of the decision comes down to three things: what your vehicle's onboard charger can accept, what your home's electrical connection can supply, and whether you need one at all yet. Here's how to work through it properly instead of just buying the highest kW number on the box.

Do you need a dedicated charger yet?

Not immediately, in some cases. A standard 15A household socket can trickle-charge most EVs overnight, slowly (often 10+ hours for a meaningful top-up) but functionally, if your daily driving distance is modest and your car sits parked for 10+ hours most nights. It's a legitimate way to live with an EV for a while before committing to a dedicated wall-box, particularly if you're renting or unsure about a long-term parking spot. The case for a dedicated charger (faster charging, safer sustained high-current use, and app-based monitoring) gets stronger as your daily driving distance grows or your available overnight charging window shrinks.

Power rating: match the charger to your vehicle, not the other way round

This is the single most misunderstood part of buying a home charger. Every EV has an onboard charger with a fixed maximum AC charging rate, commonly 3.3 kW or 7.4 kW on passenger EVs sold in India today. A more powerful home charger does not charge your car faster than your vehicle's onboard charger allows. If your car caps at 3.3 kW, a 7.4 or 22 kW home charger charges at exactly 3.3 kW, and the extra capacity goes completely unused.

Check your vehicle's owner manual or spec sheet for its onboard AC charging rate before choosing a charger power rating. Buying above that rate only matters if you plan to upgrade to a vehicle with a higher onboard charging capacity later, or if you're installing for a household with multiple EVs of different capabilities.

What your home's electrical connection needs to support it

  • 3.3 kW chargers generally run comfortably on a standard single-phase residential connection without any upgrade.
  • 7.4 kW chargers need a single-phase connection with adequate sanctioned load. It's worth confirming with your electricity provider that your existing sanctioned load has headroom for it alongside your home's other appliances, particularly air conditioning.
  • Anything above 7.4 kW for home use typically needs a 3-phase connection, which many Indian homes don't have by default and would need to apply for. That's a bigger step than most home-charging use cases require.

Certification and safety features to check

A home charger sits on your property's electrical system, drawing meaningfully more sustained current than almost any other single household device. This is not the place to shop purely on price. Look for:

  • RCD (Residual Current Device) protection, Type A or B — protects against earth faults, important given sustained high-current draw over hours.
  • An IP rating appropriate to installation location — IP55 or better for anything installed outdoors or in a covered-but-open carport, since it needs to handle monsoon humidity and dust over years of use.

Smart features worth having, and ones that aren't

Useful: app-based session history and scheduling (particularly if your state or DISCOM offers a time-of-day tariff that's cheaper overnight, see our charging cost guide for how much that can save), and remote fault notifications so you know immediately if something's wrong rather than discovering a dead charger at departure time. Less essential for most home users: elaborate load-balancing across multiple bays (relevant for workplace/destination chargers with several vehicles, not a single home unit) and features aimed at commercial billing, which a home charger simply doesn't need.

Installation: what to expect

A qualified electrician mounts the unit, runs a dedicated circuit from your distribution board (not a shared circuit with other high-draw appliances), and tests the installation before handover. For a straightforward single-phase 7.4 kW installation with adequate existing sanctioned load, this is typically a same-day job. Anything requiring a sanctioned-load increase or a 3-phase connection application adds DISCOM processing time on top, so it's worth asking about upfront rather than discovering it after ordering hardware.

Frequently asked questions

Can I install a home EV charger myself?

Not safely, and not in line with certification requirements. A home charger installation involves a dedicated circuit and RCD protection that needs a qualified electrician, both for safety and so the installation doesn't void the charger's warranty or certification compliance.

Does a home charger work during a power cut?

No, a standard grid-connected home charger has no backup power of its own. Do I need a separate charger for a two-wheeler and a car?
