How much does it really cost to charge an EV in India?
Home charging typically costs ₹1–2 per kilometre driven. Public DC fast charging costs more, usually ₹10–17 per kWh, which works out closer to ₹2–3 per km. Either way, it's a fraction of what the same distance costs in a petrol vehicle. Here's the actual math, not a rounded-off marketing claim.

Home charging cost: what your electricity bill says
Most Indian households pay somewhere between ₹5.50 and ₹9 per unit (kWh) of electricity, depending on the state DISCOM and which consumption slab you're in. Rates step up as you use more in a billing cycle. A few reference points: Delhi's lower slabs run closer to ₹3–5/unit, among the cheapest in the country; Mumbai's slabs range more widely, from around ₹5 up to nearly ₹12/unit at higher consumption; Bengaluru sits roughly in the ₹5.75–7.20/unit range on typical residential slabs.
Because EVs are efficient (a typical electric car uses roughly 12–14 kWh per 100 km), that translates to a home charging cost of about ₹1.00–1.80 per kilometre at a ₹6–9/unit tariff. Public charging cost: AC vs DC pricing
Public charging is priced differently because the operator is covering commercial electricity rates, equipment costs, and the connection itself, not your subsidized residential slab:
- Public AC charging (workplace, mall, hotel) — typically priced closer to the underlying commercial tariff, often in a similar ballpark to home charging or a little above it.
- Public DC fast charging — typically ₹10–17 per kWh across Indian networks, reflecting the higher-capacity equipment and grid connection a DC station requires. At a typical EV's efficiency, that works out to roughly ₹1.20–2.40 per km, still well below petrol, just not as cheap as charging at home.

A worked monthly example
Take a driver covering roughly 1,200 km a month (a realistic commute-plus-errands pattern) in a car using 14 kWh per 100 km. That's about 168 kWh a month.

EV cost vs petrol cost, per kilometre
A comparable petrol vehicle doing 12–14 km per litre at roughly ₹105/litre for petrol costs approximately ₹7.50–8.80 per kilometre in fuel alone. Set that against the EV numbers above (₹1.00–1.80/km charging at home, ₹1.20–2.40/km on public DC) and the gap is large under any realistic assumption, before even counting an EV's typically lower service and maintenance costs (no engine oil changes, far fewer moving parts to wear out).

The costs that don't show up on a per-kWh rate

Frequently asked questions
Does time-of-day matter for home EV charging cost?
In some states and DISCOMs, yes. Time-of-day (ToD) tariffs charge less during off-peak night hours, which lines up well with typical overnight EV charging. Check your specific DISCOM's tariff structure; it varies by state and isn't universal yet.
Is UPI or card payment at a public charger more expensive than cash?

Why is DC fast charging priced higher than home charging if it's the same electricity?
